I had a fencepost that was holding the backyard gate. When it began to rot, I knew that I had to replace it. The location was very tight and there was no access to the area without removing a substantial amount of landscaping and more fence. We were unable to approach the area easily. So it was impossible to dig a wide hole large enough to get this out of the ground. I remembered that this had been installed by placing the post in the ground and surrounding it with concrete.

I tried several different ways to see if this thing could be removed, but was completely unsuccessful. I even hooked this to the back of my car, and it just allowed the rear wheels to spin. I thought I was going to need some relatively heavy equipment to get this thing out of the ground so it could be replaced with a new gate post.

Then a friend of mine gave me a good idea. He said I should prepare the site by digging a hole large enough for the concrete ball at the base of the fencepost. In this way, if we had enough force, the post and the concrete ball could be raised to the surface. I again tried to apply this force by attaching this to the bumper of my car again. Only the wheels spun. He suggested that I wrap the base of the post as low as I could with chain. So I wrapped the chain many times around the base of this fencepost, and then I hooked the chain up to the bumper jack from the trunk of my car. I then began to pump the bumper jack with a tire iron. I found that the mechanical advantage of this type of bumper jack is enormous, and the upward thrust is almost irresistible. In this fashion, I was able to get some upward motion on the fencepost and the concrete ball. Once I got some upward motion. I was able to continue this until the fencepost and the concrete base successfully was removed from the hole.

I could now place a new fencepost and fill the hole with concrete. Without this helpful idea, I don’t know how I would possibly have been able to get this thing accomplished. This was a helpful hint that I will not forget.
