30 SepDouble Glazing Brighton

So, you’ve decided you want double glazing installed, but you don’t know where to get started. Amidst the thousands of cold calls and spam emails offering you top-notch double glazing for rock-bottom prices, it can certainly be tough to know where to start with everything. It’s really a very simple process, though. Firstly, however, you should know what double glazing is.

In short, double glazing is simply two panes of glass (in place of the traditional single pane of glass), with a gap of a couple of millimetres between the two. A small amount of air is trapped between these two panes of glass, and this effectively acts as insulation in the same way that the yellow, furry substance in your loft does. Since air is a poor conductor of heat, the heat that would otherwise have been lost to the outside atmosphere is instead captured and recirculated, resulting in a lesser temperature loss when compared to single glazed windows.

While double glazed windows are generally fairly reliable, their Achilles’ heel is moisture, which is why a drying agent is placed between the two panes during the manufacturing process to ensure that no water droplets are trapped. If water does somehow make its way into the gap between the panes, it’s usually a sign that the windows need to be replaced as they’re likely not fully airtight.

Most people, however, will never have a problem with their double glazing. In fact, they’ll find that the initial cost of replacing their old windows will soon be offset by the energy savings that result from having double glazing installed. In most cases, installing double glazing will save you ten to twelve percent on your heating bills, so it’s not hard to see how it makes good financial sense to opt for it.

So, how can you go about purchasing double glazing in Brighton? In today’s communications age, it’s not that tough. One option is simply to fire up your favourite search engine and enter terms like “double glazing Brighton”, and you’ll be presented with a handsome list of companies ready and willing to give you a quote.

The traditionalist may prefer to thumb through the trusty Brighton and Hove edition of the Yellow Pages, wherein literally dozens of listings for double glazing companies can be found. If you have friends or family in Brighton who have recently had double glazing installed and were happy with the work, you can simply ask for a referral and they’ll point you to the company that did the job.

30 SepTop 4 Options For Neighbor Friendly Fences

The dividing fence can divide relationships with neighbors, too, if people aren’t careful how they approach the subject. If you’re looking at replacing a dividing fence, it’s best to start with some consultation with your neighbors before you make any commitments. The best first move is to talk to your local fencing contractors and make sure you’ve got all the facts, prices, and options ready to show the neighbor.
The situations
Typical situations for dividing fences include a range of situations which need some diplomacy and management:
The broken down old fence: Everyone will agree this type of fence needs either repair or replacement. The problem is that costs can be either irritating or embarrassing for neighbors.
The designer fence issue: Some people, naturally, want fences that match their homes. That doesn’t mean the neighbors want to pay for it. The usual format for paying for fencing is a 50- 50 split on costs. That can run to big money.
Security fencing: Another sticky subject is security fencing. The neighbors may not see the need for a security fence, and the higher prices for security fencing are a potential issue as well.
Renovations and fencing: A property makeover will often include a new fence. That’s a natural development of the renovation process, and the new fence also adds value to the property. The cost, again, is likely to be a problem with the neighbors, but design is another possible situation requiring management.
The options
As you can see, these are potentially pretty difficult situations. To keep things on a friendly basis, you need to both see the neighbor’s perspective. You also need to find a good working proposition to cover their needs as well:
The broken down old fence: If you’re aware of any situations which may embarrass or upset the neighbor on this very obviously necessary work, don’t just hit them with a cost. Ask them how they think the problem should be handled. This means they can voluntarily tell you what they’re prepared to do, which will quantify the cost issue and any other concerns they have.
The designer fence issue: Because of the cost and design issues, diplomacy is the main requirement in this case. Tell the neighbor the situation, and explain that you’re looking for some ideas from them, because of the boundary situation. This makes it clear you’re asking them for advice, so the issue becomes instantly less abrasive. Please also note that the neighbor may have very good ideas about how to get the job done for less, so pay attention to suggestions.
Security fencing: The neighbor’s views on security fencing may not be obvious. Some people are quite happy to add some security to their property, and the opportunity to share the costs is welcome.
Renovations and fencing: Before you even start renovations, talk to the neighbors and explain you’re trying to figure out the fencing situation. Renovations can blow out costs, and a neighbor who’s onside and happy to contribute to the fencing can be very helpful.
Important: Also remember that your local fencing contractors will have had experience in these issues. They’ll be able to suggest some good cost and design options.

29 SepStocking your Water Garden Pond with Koi

One of the traditional additions to any backyard water garden is fish. It can be very relaxing to sit by your pond and watch the fish swimming in the sparkling water. You can buy large goldfish for your pond, or you could go with the traditional Japanese style and invest in some Koi. According to Japanese legend, Koi symbolize prosperity and good luck, and we could all use a bit of that. Aside from the legends, Koi are delightfully-colorful fish available in many colors such as orange, black, silver, gold, and other shades depending on where you buy them. They will make a lovely addition to the natural setting you’re trying to establish in your own back yard.

There are several things to keep in mind when you go out to buy Koi at a pond fish vendor. Look at how clean the facility is kept. If the fish are swimming in grungy water, they may not be healthy. Koi are delicate creature that need clean water and the right food. Be sure to ask the owner of the facility a lot of questions to make sure that he really knows about the needs of Koi so that you can be relatively confident that the fish you are buying have been well cared for. The price of the Koi will depend on their size and vary slightly depending on the type of Koi they are. Buying young fish will cost less, and you will have the fun of seeing them grow up right in your own pond.

Select your Koi with care. There are certain things that you need to look for to ensure that your fish are healthy and infection-free.
* Check the scales of each fish to make sure they look even and undamaged.
* Make sure the fin rays are straight.
* Look at the eyes. They should be in alignment and not popped out.
* Make sure that no fluids are oozing from their bodies anywhere.
* Avoid fish that have small white spots or splits.

You can buy Koi on numerous websites, but the disadvantage of that is that you won’t be able to inspect them when you buy them.

In order to ensure your Koi have a long, healthy life, you have to take good care of them. Make sure they have clean water. Use mechanical, biological, and UV media in the water as appropriate. Having a waterfall will be a good way to keep the pond aerated for your fish. Keep a colony of at least four to five young Koi, because they are social creatures that like being with others of their own kind. Feed them the foods they enjoy, such as shrimp. If a Koi appears to be ill, treat it immediately. By taking preventive measures and providing the type of environment Koi require, you’ll have fish to enjoy for years to come.

28 SepFruits of your Labor

Whether it’s due to a healthier lifestyle choice or simply a matter of household economics, a growing number of homeowners are converting once-forgotten corners of the yard over to food production.

The amount of home-grown grub one can produce will of course depend on how much room you have available and, perhaps more importantly, how much time you have to dedicate to your patch.

Preparation is the key to getting a successful veggie plot going and time spent in the early stages will pay dividends for years to come.

Before you start, it’s a good idea to have your soil tested to check for contamination. If it is not suitable to plant in then a raised bed may be your best option. Make sure that you dig deep and turn the soil, removing rocks and roots but taking care to avoid causing too much harm to those highly valued worms.

Location is important. Healthy plants will thrive if given the right conditions. Try to make sure that you create a south-facing plot, where the sun can fall directly onto the plants for at least five hours a day. Avoid areas with nearby trees which may cast shadows and can also cause problems due to root growth. Choose a site that gets little wind exposure.

Don’t forget to make your own compost. This environmentally-friendly way of conditioning your soil is both free and highly rewarding. If you keep a compost bin in the kitchen to gather organic waste, make sure that you use a charcoal filter to eliminate nasty odors. Prevent hungry pests from getting into the compost in your garden by fitting a secure lid to your composting bin.

When choosing what plants to grow, try to think ahead and plan for the coming months. Some vegetables are fast growers and will yield fruit relatively quickly while others take their time. Make space for some hardy, late producing plants to extend your garden’s season and remember to bear in mind just how much you will be able to eat – nobody wants a ton of cabbage with every meal.

If you wish to turn over more of your yard to self-suffiency, why not think about having a few chickens? Not only do these entertaining birds provide fresh eggs but their nitrogen rich droppings make excellent fertilizer for the rest of your garden. A bit of time and effort is required in the keeping of hens but once established, a small number of chickens will reward you with eggs on a daily basis, help out with the removal of garden weeds and provide the family with new pets to pander!

If space is at a premium it may be worth considering a container garden. This increasingly popular way of growing smaller food-bearing plants can be done almost anywhere, and is a fun way to introduce the family to the value of home-produced fruit and vegetables. One could even mix edible plants in with a few ornamental flowers for more aesthetic appeal.

Smaller containers can be used for herbs or green onions while several varieties of tomato and even strawberries will thrive in buckets and hanging baskets. Find a nice sunny spot for your container on a balcony, windowsill or deck and with regular watering plus some tender loving care you will soon be enjoying the fruits of your labor, quite literally.

26 SepHow to Buy a House

Buying a home is a major milestone in one’s life. It requires a huge investment and considerable financial adjustments to buy a home and to maintain it well. Some people buy their home very early in life, when they feel they can pay off the mortgage from their regular income, whereas others buy only at a later stage, when they finish with other responsibilities in life and still have savings left with them.

Check the Location, Facilities and Price

Whenever a house is bought, there are a few essential points to be considered.
o The house should preferably be in a locality which is close to work areas, schools, transport facilities, medical facilities, supermarkets and other amenities like entertainment and recreational facilities.
o The number of rooms and bathrooms should be enough to serve all the members of the family.
o Other requirements like lifts, parking, garden and security must also be checked.
o A thorough survey of a number of properties must be undertaken and each property must be compared in terms of facilities as well as price.

Properties can be searched online or with the help of local estate agents.

Take Your Time

It can take a long time to reach a final decision but it is better than buying a property in haste and then regretting it. The Home Information Pack is vital to understand all terms and conditions related to a particular property. Once personal choices match with financial constraints, there is a lot of legal work involved in buying a home. Pre sale alterations needed to a property must be discussed before settling for a house.

Cover All Legal Aspects

First all the money available from one’s savings (maybe both spouses’ savings) must be added up so that it can be used as a deposit. A mortgage advisor should be contacted to decide the right kind of mortgage and the amount of money to be borrowed. A property solicitor takes care of the legal aspects of buying a house, including an agreement between the partners in case of joint ownership. The title deeds to the property can be acquired with the help of a solicitor. If a mortgage is applied for, the mortgage lender conducts a survey of the property and then agrees to lend the money. The deposit is first sent to the solicitor who then sends it to the seller’ solicitor on the day of exchange of contracts. A date for handover of keys can be fixed if the house is new.

In case of an unfinished property, the transfer deed is signed by both parties and is kept with the seller’s solicitor until completion. Money is transferred from the mortgage lender to the buyer’s solicitor and then to the seller’s solicitor on completion and transfer deed, Land Registration certificate and keys are handed over to the buyer. This completes the sale. After this, the transfer deed needs to be stamped and sent to Land Registry for ownership records. The deed then remains with the mortgage lender as security.

Buying a house at an auction or buying a council house is different. Also, buying a flat or apartment involves maintenance and utility charges. It is very important to cover all legal aspects to avoid any hassles in the future.

25 SepAmerican Boxwood Hardwood Fiber Root System

The American Boxwood Hardwood is amongst the most popular type of shrubs planted today. They even have societies where people research them. The scientific name for them is Buxus Sempervirens, which means European Box. You will notice these a lot in historical, colonial, and contemporary settings and landscapes all over the world. They are popular also due to the ability to prune be pruned into many different shapes and designs. They are Native to western and southern Europe, Asia, Africa, south and Central America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.
The American Boxwood can withstand a good amount of bad weather such as snow and ice and has a high resistance to the cold, drought, and disease. The snow actually gives it a great outlined look. It requires fairly low maintenance mostly having to do with watering and pruning in the early winter months if you decide to. If you choose not to, the tree can sprout up to ten feet in height and develop a very wide spread. The growth rate is fairly slow paced.
It has attractive features such as the dark green leaves and light green as well. They have a somewhat leathery feel and are round in shape. In the springtime it grows pale yellow-green tiny delicate flowers along with the ability to sprout fruit very tiny in size with a few seeds. The shrub likes to be n the sun as long as the temperatures are not too severe as this can damage the color. You will however want to pick a spot that contains some shade so it can stay cool as well.
The shrub can handle a severe trimming if needed, since it has the ability to grow from those cut stubs. The woods from these plants are very common for their use in woodcarvings, such as chess pieces and violins. They can be grown to produce an exceptional hedging in your yard, which can have a stunning effect.
American Boxwoods are extremely cold hardy, drought tolerant and disease resistant.

Pests and diseases that affect most boxwoods leave the American alone. Stands up to heavy snow and ice, without breaking.

Keep yours trimmed for a 3 foot high, boxed foundation shrub or let it grow larger for a privacy fence.

American Boxwoods are dense and become even more dense when you trim them. Plant every 3 feet for a tight, low hedge or every 5 feet for a large property divider that will naturally grow to about 10 feet if left unpruned.

” Easy maintenance” is the key for boxwoods of all varieties. Little is required once the boxwood has been established. Light pruning in the early winter is beneficial but not required.

The shrub has a preference of fairly drained soil for the purpose of over watering and developing root disease. To prevent further disease, it is also wise to remove and dispose of any brown, dead appearing branches. To plant you will want to do so in a shallow site. All you must cover is the root ball at the base of the tree or shrub. The best time for rooting is during the late summer through fall. You will start by cutting a five to six inch piece of branch, and remove the leaves from the bottom couple of inches on cut end. You will the put in rooting media to plant the cutting, which is peat and sand. In the fall months, you will notice the leaves start to turn in color just like many other surrounding foliage. The color will result in orange and yellow leaves.

24 SepChoosing an Outdoor Firewood Rack or an Indoor Firewood Rack

There is absolutely nothing that can make someone feel better during a winter cold day than bundling up next to a warm, cozy fire. If you are storing firewood in your home our outside your home, you will need to know whether to choose an indoor firewood rack or an outdoor firewood rack or even owning both if you enjoy your indoor fireplace and your healthy outside campfire!
The way that firewood is stored is a huge deal when it comes to the firewood’s viability. Although many people usually site their firewood on the ground in and outside of their homes, it is not as beneficial as it is to choose an indoor or outdoor firewood rack.
An Outdoor firewood rack is just as it is read, for outdoor usage. It is meant to sustain different weather like snow, rain, sunlight, and is made from a sturdier material than an indoor rack is made from. If you are used to outside campfires then this will be the best choice being that it will be located in a good area outside of your home and they are also big enough and sturdy enough to sustain the outdoors.

23 SepThe Pink Diamond – What a Beauty!

The hydrangea – what a glorious, big flowering shrub! – and with more than 80 species of hydrangeas to choose from, and myriad popular varieties that are currently being cultivated for personal gardens and various types of business landscaping, everyone is sure to be able to find one that’s right for them.

One of the great things about hydrangeas is that they are not at all difficult to grow. All you need to do is give them plenty of water on a regular basis and supply them with a Ph-balanced fertilizer for them to grow beautiful, big, and healthy. Find a blended, organic product that will release nutrients gradually supplying your hydrangeas with the constant nutrition they need.

Perhaps the easiest to grow and definitely one of the most showy varieties of hydrangea is the Pink Diamond (Hydrangea paniculata) ‘Pink Diamond’. Even a person who only occasionally dabbles in gardening and has no green thumb whatsoever can easily and quickly learn that trees and shrubs will typically only show us their beautiful flowers in spring and early summer; very few flowering plants, trees and shrubs will provide the luscious showy flowers landscapers and gardeners love past that point into mid-summer or through to fall. The Pink Diamond hydrangea, however, is a spectacular exception to this general rule. This type of hydrangea is part of an awesome group of shrubs that comes from Japan. These hydrangeas begin to flower in early summer and with continue to bloom until the first frost of late fall.

Another variety, the Pee Gee hydrangea, while most likely much more familiar to landscape professionals and casual gardeners, has nothing on the Pink Diamond. This much more exciting variety of hydrangea features huge, bold blossoms that begin to bloom in mid summer and will continue to flower all the way to the first snowfall. They begin as a subtle chartreuse color, and then turn a gorgeous, snowy white during the very hottest days of summer. The Pink Diamond then fades to pink and will lastly turn a beautifully rich, deep pink in early autumn. Unlike the Pee Gee, the Pink Diamond looks daintier and more refined, and doesn’t droop with their own weight. This variety of hydrangea flowers superbly in sparse shade, and will grow exceptionally well on the north side of your home.

Like any variety of hydrangea, the Pink Diamond is a particularly dense plant and will in all likelihood grow to be very bushy and rather large. Fortunately, though, there really isn’t any reason you would need to prune them unless they happen to outgrow the space in which you’ve planted them, or removing the occasional dead or dried up stems.

So, it’s highly likely that the Pink Diamond hydrangea would be the perfect shrub for your lawn and garden – boy will your neighbors be jealous!
